I can't imagine this is about the Forest. That one seemed to be more a minor crusade, and since the West doesn't even seem to know about the Hunter, it doesn't make sense if that is it.
One of the Great Wars, after which Gerald put the Church together again, maybe? The Church was weak when he took over, and they had lots of little sects going on at the time.
