Yeah, that's what I thought - one of the things he was worried about was adapting too much to the planet and losing the connection to humanity, and I'd assume those experiments were at least in part to reassure himself that an adept can live under Earth conditions just fine.
Good point that he takes Ciani's loss seriously - I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's certainly no small thing to him.
Fanon and canon is dangerously easy to mix up, and it takes until CoS to get the majority of historical flashbacks.
Yeah, it's very hard to remember what is what sometimes! I'm still confused about the war against the Forest, too, but I suppose it won't be until CoS till we really see if it can all come together and make sense.
