Here is an annotation of C. S. Friedman's new novel, Feast of Souls, which shows, that it is not a Coldfire sequel, but that novel sounds interesting nevertheless.

It is a thousand years since the Dark Times ended and the mysterious Souleaters were finally destroyed. Some whisper that they were demons, some that they were great beasts of terrible appetite, and some have even darker suspicions about their true nature, but no one knows for certain. In their absence, a few men and women struggle to master the power of sorcery, but at a terrible cost: the only possible fuel for magic is the life-force of a human soul, a soul the user must sacrifice…or steal. Andovan is one of those souls who has been earmarked by an unknown Magister to be sacrificed for sorcery. As the faraway Magister sucks his life-force dry, he refuses to go gently, and begins a desperate search for his would-be murderer. Kamala, a child of poverty and abuse, demands to be initiated into the secret brotherhood of the Magisters and must decide what price she is willing to pay to wield their power. King Danton takes a new Magister into his service, not knowing he has an agenda: to manipulate the King to pave the way for the return of an ancient evil. Gwynofar’s family believes the Souleaters will return someday and has prepared to meet them. But her soul will be tested when, in order to save the world, she must sacrifice her own child. And the Souleaters are returning. Not merely beasts any longer, but this time allied to men who mean to subjugate the mortal world in their name. In FEAST OF SOULS, the first book of the trilogy, the first signs of that alliance are uncovered, while a prosperous world begins its decline into darkness and chaos, and the first female Magister takes her place at the heart of the storm.

Yes, especially the magic/sacrifice theme seems definitely related to me.

I haven't read any of her other books, so I'm rather curious how the characters will measure up.
