A quote I came across today while reading a book and it made me think of Gerald Tarrant. The author of the Coldfire Trilogy never mentions how Gerald managed to secure his position in the court of the king and lead social reforms and establish a church with followers and influence. He must have made a lot of enemies in the course of achieving his goals.

“The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves.”
— Niccolò Machiavelli

Sounds like him.

Heck, he could have written that book.

Machiavelli is one of my favourite historical characters. Maybe a tiny bit of Gerald was based off him? :)
