C.S. Friedman's official website (www.csfriedman.com/)has got a new look. Also [livejournal.com profile] csfriedman has been created, and they are watching us (it is not C.S. Friedman's personal journal, rather it is the place to receive the latest News posted to her website).

Actually that would be her old Official Site with a new look. ^^ It's been listed as a link all along. Still - pretty!!!

Edit the entry, and definitely add that the news are posted on LJ and that they are watching us! *is a bit terrified, yet giddy at the thought*

Definitely saw the cats! How could I miss them?! So pretty! *pets*

First thought - great to see the new site.

Second thought - updates via Livejournal? Very nice.

Third thought - um... authors watching the fandom? Slightly worrisome for the fic writers...

I'm just going to say ditto to all of that - I'm not even a writer, and it freaks me out a bit.

Alice and I checked Mrs. Friedman's stand on fanfiction, and it doesn't look like we'll be in trouble as long as we're careful about the disclaimers. So it should be all right.

And I'm convinced she can't possibly be as bad as Anne Rice, and fandom survived even that.

No one can be as bad as Anne Rice, except Anne Rice. :-)

I have to say, the bit about "asking permission" sounds a bit dodgy to me though.

It is, especially since I doubt a lot of fic writers would approach the authors about permission. It's a bit like walking up to a lion and invite it to bite you.

So, disclaimers all the way, I guess. I'll do a sample disclaimer later on, and we'll also put something up at the comm's info. Plus some sort of official admin post on the issue.

It's a bit like walking up to a lion and invite it to bite you.

Not to mention that most authors prefer the "la la la, I can't hear you" option when it comes to fanfic - they pretend they don't know anything about it. So your're asking yourself, why different here? It's like inviting censorship.

A sample disclaimer sounds good - most people do disclaimers anyway, but it can't hurt to remind everyone.

A friend and I have recently been talking about the infamous "slash question" that gets asked of actors at cons, and I really have no objection to it. These people are not stupid; they know, and if they don't want to talk about it they can deflect. But it's a whole different issue when it's not about slash in general, or fanfic in general, but these people, there - in this case, us.

The pretense often comes from copyright issues, though - if the author doesn't look at fanfic, then the fanfic writer later can't claim that her story was stolen by the original author. Or at least it's how it always looked to me.

There really isn't much we can do except play it safe and cross our fingers that Mrs. Friedman won't decide that we're being too disrespectful. Part of every fanficcer's life. ;-)

Yes, and I wonder why she doesn't seem to think it's an issue. *shrugs* As you say, not much we can do except pay attention to our disclaimers and hope for the best.

There are some authors who don't mind. And I can't really think of any reason why she should say it's essentially fine if it isn't.

Perhaps we are just a bit paranoid.

Yeah, what Lara said. Using disclaimers on fics would probablu cobver our asses. In any case, there's now a link on Mrs. Friedman's view on the fanfic matter from the comm's user info page. ^_^

I've read that bit before, and the "asking permission" bit didn't sound too good to me. But you're right - disclaimers should do it. I hope.

If I start asking permission for every fic, she'll soon hate me.

"Mrs. Friedman, I tossed Damien and Gerald into bed in a NC-17 fic. Do you mind?"

*g* What if the fandom grew? Do you think she'd like to have, like, a few hundred mails a day?

*lol* But since she said it herself that she won't write any more coldfire books, I suppose it's safe to say that anything not in the Trilogy is a safe subject to approach - even that. Or maybe, especially that!

I have no idea if she made it up or not. For all we know, Mrs. Friedman might not be adverse to homoerotica. There's no sure way to be certain, though.

And for the record, were I a famous writer I'd keep an eye on my fandom as well. I might do so in secret, but I would be really curious about what my fans are up to.

I am on Anne Bishop, Lynn Flewelling and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Yahoo mailing lists. Anne and Lynn in particular are very nice people that you can talk to. And Lynn has been known to post spoilers for her new books or extra stuff.

We'll just have to wait and see whether this affects us in any way, I guess.

It feels a bit weird, but she seems to be fine with fanfiction, so long as the writers are respectful of her rights. I checked on it when I first made Cold Fire.

PS: I have to admit, I've never had the guts to email and ask what she thinks of slash. :) She must know about it, don't you think? It seems to be the greater part of the (admittedly sparse) fandom!

*grin* Maybe it was utter disbelief at seeing it for the first time.

Did you mail her and ask about fanficton in general?

*nod*

From what it looks at the moment, as long as we are careful with the disclaimers and copyright notes, it should be all right. It's just that I started out in the Anne Rice fandoms, so I'm naturally suspicious of authors by now when it comes to fanfiction.
