Let's get the party started, shall we? From today until the end of March, we are reading Black Sun Rising.

As [personal profile] trobadora pointed out, I forgot to assign a date to the prologue. So today we get both prologue and chapter 1.

A note for new readers: there will inevitably be spoilers in the comments. If you don't want this, please feel free to read ahead, then come back and discuss.

Discussion schedule

I'll post 3 chapters/week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). But since we don't all need added stress given the world situation, please read and comment at your own pace. As with the previous group read, the discussion schedule will be included below.

Thank you [personal profile] carmenta and [personal profile] trobadora for doing the hard work the first time round to provide page numbers for the earlier editions. If you have an edition not included and would like to provide page numbers, do let me know and I'll include them. And, of course, the e-books will have different page numbers.

Discussion posts

For every chapter, I'll include a quick summary. Previously we also had: core quotes; thoughts and questions to get the discussion started. Let me know if I should include this, and also if you are interested in links to the previous discussion posts.

And of course I'll link the posts to the schedule for easy access, like we did before.

Spoilers

There might be spoilers in the comments. There's no way around it. So no spoiler warnings are required.

Tattoos?

I'm plotting a fic and got this wild idea of tattoos. Was there any mention of Damien having tattoos in the books?

A quote I came across today while reading a book and it made me think of Gerald Tarrant. The author of the Coldfire Trilogy never mentions how Gerald managed to secure his position in the court of the king and lead social reforms and establish a church with followers and influence. He must have made a lot of enemies in the course of achieving his goals.

“The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves.”

audio book

Hi all! I very recently joined the amazon audiobook site and was excited to see that coldfire books were there - I could not see a review or anything though and audio books are quite expensive so I wouldn't want to buy one only to find myself hissing in frustration every time Tarrant spoke because they got the voice all wrong or something... Just wondering if anyone has listened to them and would they recommend?

The truth is rarely pure and never simple.

Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895, Act I

I read this and it strikes me as something Gerald would say. Perhaps it's time for another re-read of the trilogy....

My Yuletide fic from this year. It's the story of how the man who used to be Gerald Tarrant, having sacrificed his very identity, nonetheless ends up in a place where ... Well. Let me just say Damien isn't exactly thrilled when he finds out, all right? *g*

It's been a while - nearly a year, in fact - and I'm updating the Coldfire Fanfic Index just in time to point you to this year's Yuletide loot before the authors are revealed. Three fics this year - I'm pretty pleased, seeing as how there were none at all last year. *g*

Dividers by Anonymous [E, slash]
Summary: "...crossing the most treacherous of all mountain ranges, fighting off the nightmare beasts that made those cold peaks their home, braving the wild fae and all that it chose to manifest, their own souls' nightmares given substance..." - Black Sun Rises, pg. 21-22 [Tarrant/Vryce]

Storm Before the Calm by Anonymous [G]
Summary: "And he remembered the storm that had overtaken them in mid-journey - hearing its winds lash the deck anew, seeing the storm-driven waves curl over the prow, angry froth cascading down forty, fifty, sixty feet to smash onto the deck with a tsunami's force - and he remembered thinking then that it was all over, that they had taken one chance too many, that this monster of the equatorial regions would surely devour them before nightfall. And then Tarrant had emerged." -When True Night Falls, Chapter One

Such Beginning by Anonymous [T, het]
Summary: In which Damien finds Gerald suspicious, Gerald finds Narilka intriguing, and beginnings and endings meet. (Post-trilogy.) [Gerald/Narilka, Gerald&Damien]

And everyone else has been quite prolific as well, it seems! ( follow me to my journal for 53 (!!) more new stories! )

As ever, let me know if I've missed anything, or if you spot any errors!

I've just finished a re-read of the trilogy and got caught up in mentally casting it all over again:

I also have loose ideas for Hesseth. Possibly Michelle Yeoh or Maggie Q, simply for their grace and elegance. The Prince could be someone like Guy Pearce, who can be gorgeously striking but terrifying. I was going to say Jennifer Connelly for Narilka, but she's too strong a presence already. I'm sure more'll come to me in time :) Thoughts?
[identity profile] owleyes-arisen.livejournal.com
If the Coldfire series was set within/fused with Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials 'verse, what kind of daemons do you think the main characters would have?
[identity profile] owleyes-arisen.livejournal.com
I just read a fanfic story where Damien was secretly a werewolf, in deliberate juxtaposition to the Hunter's existence as a semi-vampire. I now find that I have the sudden urge to write at least a drabble in the same vein...

Thoughts, everyone? If Damien was a supernatural being instead of a vanilla mortal (not Vampire, please) what kind of entity do you think he'd be?

EDIT: Am currently abut halfway done with my story; it's hard to say. Anyone interested in being my beta when I have it in a roughly manageable form?

Art Dump!

I was recently introduced to this wonderful series, and I breezed through all the books! I wish I could contribute fic to the community like all the wonderful writers here, but it's probably for the best that I spare everyone the ordeal of reading somethign that I try to write. Instead, I bring some art!

So there's new Coldfire canon out there, and it's excellent! Dominion is an absolutely delightful backstory novella, and you really should all go and read it NOW. Watch me flail about it spoiler-free on my LJ, or flail with plenty of spoilers in the discussion post!

Of course it won't surprise anyone that this is what's finally inspired me to update the Coldfire Fanfic Index. New entries since 1st January 2011, total: 20. Not completely dead, this fandom, even if [livejournal.com profile] hunters_forest has been quiet! But I must say, people, you're letting me down - not a single Yuletide fic this year! :( Do better next year, all right?

Tonight I checked ALL THE LINKS, and edited and updated everything. There should be no dead links left; everything that's no longer available should be clearly marked. (So much strike-through! I wish sites didn't vanish and people didn't delete their fic ...)

Anyway, the following 20 stories have been added to the Coldfire Fanfic Index:

We need one of these, so here it is! I for one am very excited about the novella *cough*understatement*cough*, and reading it has obviously led to my wanting to discuss it with people who have already read it and will have likely formed their own opinions.

Compulsory warning: SPOILERS AHEAD! Both under the cuts, and likely in the comments. :)

I apologize if this has been shared before but [livejournal.com profile] alice_montrose's recent post sent me searching for anything new on The Coldfire Trilogy that I could find.

I've been spending quite a bit of time perusing this wonderful site, "The Rakland and in particular, enjoyed this fascinating essay "The Hell's Darkest Prince" about our favorite (and only) Neocount of Merentha.
